  • Dan and Diane’s Proposal at the Basilica!

    Dan and Diane's Proposal

    Hey Joe,
On September 15, 2010, Diane and I took an excursion into Rome from the cruise ship.  Our excursion took us to the Vatican City where we walked through the Vatican museum.  Then we went through the Sistine Chapel, and to St. Peter’s Basilica.  There, in the middle of the Basilica, I pulled Diane from the tour into an open space.  I held her hand and looked her in the eye and said:  “Baby, we’ve seen some of the most beautiful things today, created by the hand of God, but nothing as beautiful as you,” as I dropped to my knee and showed her the engagement ring.  Then I said, “I love you so much, will you marry me?”  She started to cry and said: “I would love to…I love you so much.”  I put the ring on her finger and had a deep romantic kiss as the folks looking on started to clap. That photo was sent to me by someone on the tour.  People we didn’t even know were coming up to us and giving us hugs and kisses.  It was awesome.
P.S. Thank you Joe, so much for helping me with the ring.  It made a beautiful experience really shine.

    Best regards, Dan

  • I LOVE the necklace!!! Better yet, Catherine LOVES it!!

Here’s a custom jewelry project with a long history. Christine and I have been friends since grade school. We attended Tavan Elementary, Ingleside Middle and Arcadia High schools together. Christine’s parents were customers of my father’s and for Christine’s high school graduation, her parents had a gold and diamond initial pendant made. Now, a “few” years later it’s Christine’s daughter Catherine who is graduating.

So Christine contacted me several weeks before the big day to talk about carrying on the tradition. Her idea was to do something a little more updated; have the piece made in white gold rather than yellow gold and to update the type style somewhat. In addition, she wanted to make it even more personal and special by incorporating diamonds from her collection along with diamonds from her sister, Daphne’s collection (Daphne also received a diamond initial for her high school graduation). The results are below. Click on the images to see larger versions.

  • Divorce Rings – The New Next Fashion?

Sure, it sounds a little macabre but really, why not? For some, a divorce ring represents a renewed sense of freedom or rebirth or simply, a symbol of healing. For others, it means that their marriage and its ending have been part of their life – a part for which they are proud. A transitional ring, if you will.

According to a piece in the New York Times:

When her divorce was nearly final three years ago, Wanda Dibben, 41, who lives outside Kansas City, Mo., asked a jeweler, George Rousis, to transform her wedding ring into a divorce ring. Ms. Dibben, who had been married 13 years, said she had been “very attached” to her wedding ring and hoped that reconfiguring it could “be kind of a buffer into my independence again and help facilitate healing.”

Her jeweler severed the gold band and refashioned it into a ring with a gap, across which strands of silver are stitched. For Ms. Dibben, those strands represent her son, Trevor, now 14, “because although the bonds have been broken, the stitches still keep that unity together,” she said.

Remember, rings are for everyone, not just the happily married. YOU choose what they symbolize for you and let us design it for you. Every detail can remind you or who you are and who you want to be.

  • Steve and Gina’s Fabulous Proposal!

Being in the engagement ring business, we get to hear about a lot of marriage proposals. This one is tops in our book! As one of the couple’s friends put it, “Dear god, I’m speechless. What a great story!” We couldn’t agree more.

Of course, along with a fabulous description of the magical trip is a nice little blurb about the custom engagement that we were lucky enough to help with, along with some really great photos. So, we have to boast a little bit here and showcase not only a fab proposal but some of our handy work. Thanks for the pics of the finished piece, Steve and Gina, they turned out way better than anything we could ever have come up with in our little studio! Have a look at this magical experience for yourself here.

    An excerpt from the post:
<<A few details about the ring since I know some of you are curious… Gina really wanted a split shank so that was a must. We looked at many rings over the past year and ended up with a few specific settings that were her favorites. In the end, I decided to take those designs and have her ring custom made to incorporate all the elements she liked best. She absolutely loves how it turned out and I do too, so hats off to the jeweler!>>

Ok, so we have to throw in a few pics of the custom process, just to help anyone out there thinking of doing this themselves. As Steve put it, they combined features of several pieces to make something truly unique and special to them.

Thanks again for the opportunity to help you with your ring, Steve and Gina, it was a lot of fun for us as well! And congratulations to you both!

Update from Joe: Here’s one of the best wedding videos we’ve seen. You two keep outdoing yourselves!

  • Francesca’s New/Old 50th Anniversary Custom Wedding Ring

Our long time friend Francesca came to us to make a custom 18kt yellow gold wedding band for her and her husband Leo’s 50th wedding anniversary. She wanted an old world feel, something that looks used and worn, something heavy that feels nice to the touch and smooth to wear. Fran liked the way a pair of her earrings looked and thought they could be the inspiration for the piece that would signify their special day.

The wedding band in the image with the earrings was the original wedding ring that Fran’s father gave to her mother. This piece, of course, is extremely sentimental to Fran and her family. We can only hope that the ring we made for Fran will someday have a similar meaning to her family.

Have you thought of a family heirloom that you would like to create? If so, we would be honored to help you with this!

  • A Special Aquamarine Necklace for A Special Person

    Joe,
This photo doesn’t do the necklace justice but thought I’d send it to you anyway.
    With warm wishes,
    Liliana.
    . . . . . and, from another email:
Yes, I am enjoying the necklace very much.   Thank you for telling me about how much this meant to you and how much you enjoyed making it.  That makes it even more special.   Peter told me that when it was made and you were showing others that they wanted to take/buy it themselves.

Note from Joe. Every year during the holidays it seems that I have one project that I pay particular attention to, one that captures my interest more than the others. This past season it was a necklace for my dear friends Peter and Liliana. It was a lot of fun working with Peter on this piece, choosing the aquamarine, working with the wax carver, working with the goldsmith, doing all that we do to make a custom piece of jewelry. It was big fun for me partly because of whom this piece was for, as both Peter and Liliana are special to me, and partly because I got to play with one of my designs! So thank you Peter for this!

  • The Super Bowl Ring Goes to…The Saints!

(above) The Giants Super Bowl championship ring from 2 years ago. The design of the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl ring has not yet been revealed!

We know the Saints will get them…but did you know how much they cost? How much their worth? Their history?

Well, here at Joseph Schubach Jewelers, we’re here to fill in the blanks for you. Heck, we can make you your own Super Bowl Ring, made of moissanite or other diamond alternatives – if $5,000 is a little too steep!

The Super Bowl ring is an award in the National Football League given to the members of the winning team of the league’s annual championship game, the Super Bowl.

These rings are typically made of yellow or white gold with diamonds. They usually include the team name, team logo, and Super Bowl number (usually indicated in Roman numerals).

The NFL pays for the cost of 150 rings to the winning team, at roughly $5,000 apiece, depending upon the fluctuating cost of gold and diamonds. The winning team can typically present rings to whomever they choose, including usually, but not limited to: players (active roster or injured), coaches, trainers, executives, personnel, and general staff.

Some teams have also been known to give rings to former players, despite not having been on the winning roster.[1] Teams can distribute any number of rings, but must pay for any over the 150-ring limit.

Many rings feature diamonds in the shape of the Vince Lombardi Trophy or a football. Some feature diamonds or gold in the shape of a team logo. Others illustrate the number of Super Bowls that franchise has won. Also, the rings are customized with the player’s name and uniform number.

Replicas of the rings for various years are popular collectibles, along with genuine rings. Dave Meggett is known to have placed his ring for sale on eBay. Two Super Bowl rings from the 1970 Steelers sold on eBay for over $32,000 apiece in mid-2008.[2] Patriots safety Je’Rod Cherry raffled his ring from Super Bowl XXXVI in November 2008 to benefit several charities working to help children in Africa and Asia.[3]

Go, New Orleans! You deserve a break!

  • The Hottest Jewelry at the Grammys

As we saw at this 2010 Grammy award ceremony, people were ready to crawl out of the economy shell and be a little flashier.

None was this more evident than Beyonce’s hoop earrings (that must have felt like quite a relief to take off at the end of the evening):

Beyoncé At The Grammys 2010 Wearing Huge Statement Earrings

Here’s what Sparkle Like the Stars had to say about the top jewelry looks for the evening:

    1. Beyonce took home six Grammy Awards, including a Grammy for Record of the Year, and she accessorized her golden goodie with some killer diamond hoop earrings that went with her sequined silver dress. We love the hoops, though we’re sure that the critics will have a thing or two to say about the flashy frock.

    2. Carrie Underwood wore a gorgeous gold gown for her performance during the show, and she accented the glamorous dress with pitch-perfect diamond jewelry. Our favorite piece was her glimmering diamond bracelet with a swirling design- though her engagement ring from hockey player Mike Fisher was a close second.

    3. Sheryl Crow paired her simple brown dress with some gorgeous gold jewelry. The actress piled on the gold bangle bracelets on her left wrist that matched her large, golden pendant earrings. To balance the look Crow wore an emerald cocktail ring on her right hand.

  • Lost Ring Stories – Lord of the Ring

Nothing feels worse than a lost ring, whether it’s a family heirloom or a natural diamond or moissanite engagement ring or even a simple silver band that your high school sweetheart gave you – you feel as if a part of you has been lost as well.

This story will remind that even when chances seem slim, there is always a glimmer of hope:

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A New Zealand man who promised his wife he would find his wedding ring after it fell into the capital’s murky harbor has succeeded — 16 months later.

Ecologist Aleki Taumoepeau was checking Wellington harbor for invasive plant species in March last year when the ring went into 10 feet of water.

“It flew off into the air and everyone on the boat was looking at it and said it was like a scene from Lord of the Rings in slow motion,” Rachel Taumoepeau was quoted as saying in Thursday’s Dominion Post newspaper.

He tossed an anchor overboard to mark the spot and pledged to Rachel, his wife of three months, that he would find it.

She offered to buy a replacement. “I just said ‘No, I’ll find it,'” he said.

An initial search three months after the loss failed, but Taumoepeau was determined. He returned again recently for another dive, risking chill midwinter temperatures.

“I was getting cold and tired, so I said to God, it would be really good to find the ring about now,” he said.

He spotted the anchor — with the ring lying just inches away.

“I couldn’t believe that I could see the ring so perfectly,” he said. “The whole top surface of the ring was glowing” in the normally murky waters.

Friends have taken to calling Taumoepeau “Lord of the Ring.”

  • Lost Ring, Rediscovered after 33 Years!

It doesn’t matter whether its a natural diamond or moissanite or Gemesis, a lost ring can hurt! This story will give you hope that in the world of missing rings, all things are possible!

A British woman who lost her wedding ring in her garden 33 years ago said she was shocked when a former neighbor called to say the ring had been found.

Anthea Capewell, 60, said her engagement and wedding rings flew off when she closed her garden gate in Stapleford, England, in 1976, and after a thorough search, only the engagement ring was recovered, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Capewell said she and her husband, David, moved out of their home eight years after losing the ring, and she had long given up hope of ever seeing it again.

However, former neighbors Don and Carol Rigby called Capewell recently to say they had found the ring buried in some garden weeds on their side of a hedge shared by the two homes.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked and, of course, I was ecstatic,” Capewell said. “I just couldn’t believe it.

“It must have worked its way down into the soil after we missed it all those years ago. It came up like new with just a bit of soap water.”

Capewell said the discovery has inspired her and David to renew their wedding vows next year.
