  • Delicate Jewelry – from Streisand to Aniston

A few months ago, Jennifer Aniston decided to pay homage to one of her favorite and funniest stars, Barbra Streisand. The shots are amazing but what impressed me was one particular shot that showcased Jennifer (and Babs) wearing a simple necklace, with multicolored rings hanging from it.

For the last several seasons, we have been bombarded by statement necklaces – oversized, bold and occasionally bordering on the garish. It was refreshing to see a delicate piece that seemed to enhance, ever so slightly, an average gal’s outfit (though these ladies are far from average!)

The necklace is Cartier’s Trinity necklace, which goes for about $1000. (We can make one for you at a fraction of the cost!) It features 3 intertwined circles of gold – each representing different stages in a relationship: yellow gold for friendship, pink gold for love and white gold for loyalty.

  • More on Black Rhodium

Yesterday, we talked about the increasing popularity of black metals, adding a certain complexity of look that enhances urban fashions of the seasons. Whether its darkened platinum, blackened silver, oxidized gold or black rhodium, this hard-edged look is gaining lots of traction in the jewelry making world.

Here’s a recent piece of ours, using a black rhodium finish:

  • Dark Metals – All the Rage

Darkened metals possess a hard, edgy look that has been hitting the mainstream in a major way this season. When comparing it to some of the lighter metals, you’ll notice a more complex look that seems to really gyve with the more urban fashions of the Fall.

Remember, any of the pieces below can be recreated and revised according to your particular tastes. What you envision, we create.

  • Two Wedding Rings – A New Trend?

We’ve recently seen several of our customer requesting not one, but two wedding rings – one for each side of the engagement ring. I recall many years ago hearing about this trend in Australia and New Zealand. Has it finally caught on here?

Here is an example from one of our customers. They purchased a ring very similar to our style 9617 and added an anniversary style band on each side.

    Camel.

    No. Not this one:

    This one:

According to The Los Angeles Time fashion section:

    COLOR ME CAMEL‬‪

If there was any doubt that camel is the color of the fall season, it was cleared up by designer Hannah MacGibbon. Her Chloe collection was a study in the classic hue and every other shade of beige, from caramel to bark to bisque.

Camel is a fresh alternative to black, reflecting fashion’s renewed interest in classic American-style sportswear, a trend that we saw on the runways in New York at Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam, and in Milan at Gucci and Max Mara.

In Paris, nearly every designer had a camel coat on the runway. Chloe’s MacGibbon showed sturdy man-tailored camel’s hair coats alongside sleek high-waist trousers, dotted bow-front blouses or chambray shirts, and cowboy boots.

At Stella McCartney, the camel coat was sportier, more akin to an anorak. At Hermes, it was cut close to the body with a smart black leather collar. Lanvin’s camel coat had sculpted power shoulders.

Hussein Chalayan showed a camel’s hair poncho. And at Martin Margiela, camel came in the form of a classic turtleneck sweater, paired with a crimson red coat — a color combination that’s definitely worth trying on at home.

As for the perfect jewelry acompaniment, we think Gemesis is a real standout and a natural pairing against the rich, lush texture and color of camel.

  • Motif Jewelry – Creating your own Statement

What’s your totem animal? Are you stealthy and cat-like or more the lovable puppy? Perhaps you simply love frogs and they adorn your house (not the live kinds!)

Or you’re intrigued by any TV show featuring sharks. Or you’ve never gotten rid of that childhood love of dinosaurs.

Whatever your motif, we can create a piece of jewelry out of it. This has been done for centuries of course, and is tribal in origin. Some believe you are empowered by your totem animal or symbol and wearing it serves to strengthen you. Wear coins and bring money into your life. Wear sunshine and find your spirits lifting!

Here’s a little more on motif jewelry for 2010:

Don’t shy away from strong imagery this season.

Snakes, elephants, flowers, birds, and coins are some of the most popular motifs.

These elements add a very particular mood to a collection so find one that you like and then style it in a way that makes it your own.

Emphasize a motif by repeating it in many different ways.

For example: a necklace dripping with metal textured elephants, enamel elephants, carved wood elephants, and mixed with cords and chains can be a statement piece.

Applying chains in a snake-like pattern to a fabric frontal necklace can evoke the feeling of the snake without actually using the image.

Mixing and layering colorful flowers in fabrics, beads, and metals can create a romantic statement.

  • Fashion during the American Revolution

In honor of the 4th of July celebrations in the states, we wanted to take a moment and review the fashion of our forefathers and foremothers.

Oh yes, these fashion choices seem a little constricting (and just damn hot) but somebody had to wear this stuff, right?

The lady wears strapless stays over a pink chemise. Her petticoat has pocket slits to access the free-hanging pocket beneath. "Tight Lacing, or Fashion Before Ease", 1770–75

French silk sack-back gown with closed bodice and panniers, trimmed with padded bands of blue satin, chenille blonde lace, flowers of gathered ribbon, feathers and raffia tassels, 1775–1780

Marie Antoinette was one of the most influential figures in fashion during the 1770s and 1780s, especially when it came to hairstyles.
