  • Lessons in Black Diamonds

Yes, Virginia…diamonds come in black, too. Diamonds come in a wide array of colors, including yellow, red and blue. But a black diamond has a mystery and uniqueness like no other. Other than their inky hue, they also possess some other interesting traits:

    According to Black Diamond Jewelry:

    1) They’re porous.

    2) Most of them are very tiny. Larger black diamonds, instead of being one large crystal, have a polycrystalline structure, meaning they’re made up of millions of small crystals which are all stuck together.

    3) They are only almost exclusively in two locations- other types of diamonds are found throughout the world. Furthermore, diamonds are normally found in the mineral kimbertite. Black diamonds are found in newer and different deposits of a sedimentary nature.

    4) They have a different carbon isotope (same chemical element with different atomic weights and physical properties) than other diamonds. These isotopes are commonly found in the earth’s crust, rather than inside the earth (mantle), where other diamonds originated.

    5) Natural black diamonds are black because their unique crystalline structure absorbs light.

Black diamonds also don’t sparkle like traditional “white” diamonds. They absorb light instead of reflecting it.

  • Lily Safra’s Jewelry Auction Expected to Raise over 20 Million

Only a connoisseur with an eye as refined as that of Mrs. Lily Safra could have collected such an ensemble of jewels, and only someone with her philanthropic conviction could have expressed such powerful support to worthwhile causes in all charitable fields,” – François Curiel, International Head of Christie’s Jewellery Department

Lily Safra’s auction of her personal jewelry in Geneva in May includes this set of twelve antique diamond leaf brooches and a pair of ear clips from the mid-19th Century.

The jewelry collection of famed philanthropist, Lily Safra, will be up for auction at Chrisite’s Geneva on Monday May 14, with all proceeds to be donated to 20 different charitable institutions. The collection includes the largest single-owner selection of jewels by JAR ever to be offered at auction.

Regarded as a major philanthropist, Safra is also a discerning connoisseur. This jewelry collection reflects her refined taste and its evolution through five decades, from the 1970s to the present day. Featuring 70 lots, the sale at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues is estimated to fetch more than $20 million. It includes important diamonds, rubies and sapphires, as well as an outstanding array of fine antique and period jewelry.

  • “I am already about to be a repeat customer”

Schubach- Thanks so much for working with me to get the exact custom
set earrings I wanted. I was initially uncomfortable making a
significant purchase across the country (AZ to PA!) but got super
customer service, including the direct attention of the owner (Joe).
When the earrings arrived, they were amazing- great, solid
workmanship, high quality stones and settings for a VERY competitive
price. I am already about to be a repeat customer. -Jessica in PA.

  • The First Lady and Major Statement Jewelry

Michele Obama – or for that matter, most First Ladies – are seen as fashion plates. Just as the red carpet in Hollywood and Fashion Week indicate upcoming trends, so does Michele Obama. So what has she been bejeweled with as of late? A lot, apparently!

    According to Jewelry Insider:

Michelle Obama “brought out the Binns” to light up the State Dinner honoring British Prime Minister, David Cameron and his wife Samantha, and I literally stopped in my tracks when I saw her on the news.
The Divine Mrs. O set off her stunning teal Marchesa dress with a Tom Binns statement necklace made from a bonanza of teal, blue, silver and white pearls layered over a giant rhinestone piece, according to USMagazine.com.

“I love the addition of texture with the Tom Binns necklace,” Roksanda Ilincic, who dressed Obama for the evening, told reporters.

AND – she topped off the look with geode stud earrings by none other than Kimberly McDonald .
