Jewelry Education and Advice

  • Do large earrings suit your face?

Large earrings aren’t for everyone, especially if you have a smaller face (where they can overwhelm your look). There’s always a comfort aspect as well; jewelry should be comfortable, right? Large earrings can still make a statement without causing. Balance and proportion are key. Luckily we have a vast collection to peruse so you can find a pair of earrings that will perfectly match your site.

  • The Touching Beauty of Mourning Jewelry

Since the beginning of humankind, death has been memorialized with  jewelry. Whether pieces of jewelry were included in the tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh or worn by a queen after her king has died, it’s a natural extension of mourning.

More specifically, mourning jewelry has been around since at least the 16th century. It’s most closely associated with the Victorian era, worn by Queen Victoria and her court, after the death of  England’s Prince Albert.

Hairwork was a common practice when creating mourning jewelry. Necklaces, braclets, rings and brooches often contained woven human hair (not necessarily from the deceased interestingly enough. Hair was often imported into the UK for mourning jewelry).

  • It’s Officially Okay – Mix your Metals!

A friend of mine told me this weekend that it’s still ingrained in her to wear all gold or all silver–never shall the twain meet. Her mother taught her that fashion lesson many eons ago.

After several cups of coffee and a shared sticky bun, I finally convinced her that the old fashion rule is just that…old! (It’s up there with wearing white shoes after Labor Day.)

Dare to wear multi-colored metals. They often gently enhance tones in each other and add more depth to your outfit.

Before my friend and I parted ways that day, she was finally convinced.. And I felt like I had done my part for fashion (!).

  • The Gemstones of January

Is it really 2016? According to the calendar, yes. According to the staff at our office, we’re slowly getting used to the fact.

One thing that does excite us about January? The amazing birthstones that represent this month. As you may already know, like several months, January has several gemstones to represent its often frosty but fresh exterior.

Garnet is the most widely known birthstone for January. Before garnet was made the birthstone of January, it was the zodiac gem for Capricorn and Aquarius, both falling partly on the month of January.

Garnet represents eternal friendship and trust and is the ideal gift for a friend. Garnet is derived from the word granatum, meaning seed, and is called so because of the gemstone’s resemblance to a pomegranate seed.

Zircon is often seen as a transparent gemstone but is also popular in blue and red. This red zircon is the birthstone for January according to the ancient Italian and Russian calendar. Zircon is believed to enhance peace of mind, as well as bring prosperity.

Emerald is the birthstone for January in the old Tibetan calendar. It’s believed to bring well-being and as stimulate clairvoyance.
