Most of us who were alive in the 70’s remember mood rings. These pop culture rings told you, by the shift of their color, whether you were calm or tense or anywhere in-between. But did they have any validity?
How Mood Rings Work?
Mood Rings contain thermotropic liquid crystals inside the stone or the band of the mood ring. These liquid crystals are able to show different colors at different temperatures. The liquid crystals in modern mood jewelry are usually made from a flat strip of liquid crystals with a protective coating. These crystals react to changes in temperature by twisting. The twisting changes their molecular structure, which alters the wavelengths of light or color that are reflected or absorbed. When the temperature of the liquid crystals changes so will their color and this is how mood rings work.
Do Mood Rings Work / Do they really show your emotions?
Your mood is correlated with your body temperature. A person’s normal body temperature is 82°F (28°C). When you are stressed or cold blood is directed to the internal organs and away from the skin and the mood ring will turn a darker color. If you are happier or feeling passionate the crystal will twist in another direction and start to change color as your body temperature increases. Therefore there is a correlation with mood and your body temperature so to some degree a mood ring can show your emotion.
There are other factors why the mood ring will change that are unrelated to mood such as such as just finishing a work out or having a hot bath. Mood Rings and Mood Jewelry can’t tell your emotional state exactly but what they can do is provide you with a beautiful color changing ring; a guide to your mood and have a lot of fun deciding which ‘mood’ you are in.

While we don’t believe much in superstition here at Joseph Schubach Jewelers, we couldn’t help but smile at this very particular survey.
British website comparejewellery.com researched what it calls the “unluckiest engagement ring”—the ring most commonly worn by brides whose marriages end in divorce.
The site asked 1,812 women age 18 and over, all separated or divorced, about their engagement ring. According to the site, the ring with the worst juju has a white gold band with a large square-cut stone and diamonds on shoulder. It costs an average of £822.30 ($1,341.09).
“The ring itself is both incredibly beautiful and a popular style, but maybe that will change once people know its somewhat unlucky reputation,” said Ali O’Neill, head of product at comparejewellery.com, in a statement.
Bad luck or no, more than a third (35 percent) of respondents still claimed to wear their engagement rings even after their marriages ended.
Well we have a special diamon fairy that blesses each engagement ring with long-lasting happiness, so not to worry if you choose your ring from us!
When I read about this ritual, I had to ask myself (before I read the answer) what could tarring and feathering a spouse-to-be possibly symbolize? And how the heck do they get the tar off? Well apparently its not real tar and the symbolism is actually quite interesting.
Anyway more on this dirty little ritual:
Tar and feathers, anyone? For Scotland’s tradition of blackening of the bride, which has expanded to now include the groom, absolutely anything goes. This includes tars, feathers, pillow stuffing, molasses, dirt, rotting food, sour milk, flour, smashed garbanzo beans, sushi — you name it and you got it, you can certainly pile it on. The blackening takes place prior to the wedding, which at least spares the tux and wedding dress, but any time or location is fair game. Once blackened, the lucky newlywed-to-be is paraded through the streets or tethered to a tree as said “friends” announce the wedding. Blackening supposedly prepares the person for any humiliation that life has yet to bring, as nothing could be as humiliating as being blackened.

We’ve followed a lot of unusual jewelry trends over the years but I’d have to say this one stopped me in my tracks this morning. A Rhode Island woman has figured out a way to encase breast milk in jewelry for moms…or I guess anyone else who fancies wearing breast milk jewelry. Thanks to the Daily Beast for this distinctive story!
After struggling with breast-feeding her first child, Rhode Island mother of three Allicia Mogavero decided to commemorate the lactation process by turning her breast milk into wearable jewelry.
“The whole nursing experience was really profound for me. I was like, I wonder if I can preserve this. I wonder if there’s a way I can make it last forever,” she tells The Daily Beast.
Mogavero launched a website to help others do the same. Her so-called MommyMilk Creations are made by petrifying customers’ breast milk and encasing it in resin, which protects the hardened milk from shattering. The resins come in a range of shaped molds, including hearts, trees, and handprints, and can be customized to include a child’s name. Once the resin is cured, Mogavero then attaches chains to the molds so the pieces can be worn as necklaces, bracelets, and key chains.
