  • DIY (Dream it Yourself) Custom Design Contest Update

We’ve had a few inquiries regarding our contest. Here’s the response we recently sent to our contestants:

We wanted to reach out and keep you posted regarding your custom design piece entered in our DIY (Dream it Yourself) Custom Design jewelry contest.

First of all, thank you. Each and every piece has its own distinctive look and feel. It’s a genuine pleasure to share in this creative process with you.

Currently, we’re busy in the studio designing and creating your special piece of jewelry. Our next step is to build an online gallery for the world to see your masterpiece. Because of the amount of entries (29 contestants in total!), we anticipate completion by the end of November.

But you don’t have to wait that long to see these amazing works of art. Simply “like” us on Facebook, where we’ll post weekly updates and create a dedicated album of the jewelry in its various stages of progress.
You can also check out our blog (or add it to your RSS feed) where we’ll also be posting videos, images, stories and descriptions.

Remember: If you have any interesting or romantic back story to your custom design piece, please share it with us.

And if you haven’t already, create a personalized name for your piece (“Hearts at Play Ring by Cris” or “Steven’s Bling Ring,” for instance) and send it out way. (These personal touches really help your piece stand out during the voting period.)

So again, like us on Facebook and check out our blog frequently for updates. And email me at joe@schubach.com with personalized info about your piece.

Thanks again for your patience and your contribution to this contest. We hope to create the best pieces possible…and hopefully, highlight you as a winner!

  • 2012 Fall Cuffs – All the Rage

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York highlighted the work of two amazing designers: fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo and jewelry designer Hera Arkarakas. And while Arkarakas admits her jewelry is meant predominantly for casual wear, any audience member could see how her designs paired nicely with Valvo’s more glamorous outfits.

And those cuffs! Simple yet urban chic…and infinitely wearable.

Arkarakas teamed with fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo for his runway show, creating a limited edition line of cuffs, which were paired with his spring 2013 collection. Made in oxidized sterling silver, onyx and coral composite, models wore Hera jewelry with Valvo’s cocktail dresses, swimwear and ready-to-wear looks.

Hera jewelry is designed with wearability in mind, and is meant to be layered and easily transition from day to night, which was illustrated in the variety of outfits worn by the models that were paired with Hera cuffs.

  • History of the Pierced Ear

I wondered about this over coffee this morning: how long have pierced ears been around? I must not have been fully caffeinated yet because my guess was that it started in the 1960’s! Apparently, I’m a few hundred centuries off.

Pierced ears and earrings for pierced ears have been found on every continent throughout history. Evidence from the earliest civilizations in the Middle East show that pierced ears were worn at least six thousand years ago, but given the popularity of pierced ears in non state-level societies, they certainly must predate the archaeological record. Multiple ear piercings were used in some cultures, such as ancient Mesopotamia, pre-Colombian Meso-America, and the Greco-Roman world. Many cultures have also stretched the ear holes and worn earplugs. Earplugs were worn by ancient Egyptians, Mayans, and Aztecs, by the Chinese, as well as by traditional cultures around the world.
