  • Oprah Highlights Custom Jewelry Maker Gemvara

    null

It’s often been said that everything Oprah touches turns to gold. In this case, the jewelry she chose to wear will mean gold to one jeweler.

The custom jewelry maker Gemvara was featured this month on Oprah Winfrey’s “Favorite Things 2012” cable special; Winfrey picked a pair of “naked cushion triple earrings” that range in price from $1,109 to $1,688, depending on the gemstone.

Founder Matt Lauzon says it wasn’t a paid placement, exactly: “One of Oprah’s people spotted Gemvara and the earrings at a party our PR team hosted, and brought them to Oprah.” Winfrey wore the earrings on the show and gave a pair to everyone in the audience. “That piece was very cool, because they were all spouses of members of the military,” Lauzon says.

  • Cyber Monday, the New Black Friday

How do these marketers do it? Black Friday was already a shopper’s paradise (or hell, depending on your perspective). But then Cyber Monday came along and changed everything in the virtual world.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed online sales spiked on the Monday following Thanksgiving, is the next in a series of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

It’s estimated that this year’s Cyber Monday will be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up 20% from last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers have ramped up their deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

  • Palladium Wedding Band with Black Stripe

Palladium is quickly becoming my favorite metal for guy’s wedding bands. The slightly gray color, and the fact that palladium acts a lot like platinum – but without the platinum price  – makes for a great, masculine ring! The black strip is pretty cool as well as the comfort fit.

  • Smart Shopping Tips for Black Friday

It’s almost here. If you listen hard enough, you can hear the sounds of cash registers and stampeding feet. But if you play it smart, you can take advantage of the deals without the crowds.

    1. Arm Yourself With Apps Like Decide.

ABC News and the Perillos [bloggers for CTWorkingMoms.com] were surprised to learn that online prices fluctuate hourly. The price of a Sony camera dropped three times — almost $50 — in the course of 12 hours.

At the store, the Perillos saw a digital camera they’d been considering. Using the Decide app, they scanned the barcode and then searched through thousands of pieces of information to see whether they should buy it now or wait for a lower price.

    2. Click to Compare

A Tigger toy — at the top of the girls’ holiday list — that Sarah Perillo had found at Target for $39.99 was marked down to $28.99. Using an app called Red Laser, she scanned the bar code and found it for a lower price — $21. Because Target matches competitors’ online prices this year, Sarah Perillo took it home for $21.
