Jewelry Education and Advice

  • The Basics on Engagement and Wedding Ring Etiquette

I stumbled across this Q & A at The Knot and it made me realize that many people don’t understand the basics when it comes to wedding and engagement ring etiquette. This answer provides you the general rules:

    Q.

I’m clueless when it comes to engagement ring and wedding ring etiquette. Do I have to have a wedding ring, or could I just continue to wear my engagement ring after I’m married?

    A.

Though there’s not necessarily a correct way to do it, most married folks do wear their wedding rings at all times (with or without their engagement ring). After all, it’s a symbol of your love, devotion, and, well, the fact that you’re no longer engaged — you’re married!

Our advice? Choose a wedding ring you love and won’t mind wearing all the time. It doesn’t have to be a perfect match with your engagement ring. You can choose to wear your wedding ring and engagement ring together on your left hand; wear your wedding band on the left and engagement ring on your right; or just wear your wedding ring. (Many women choose not to wear their engagement rings all the time simply because their setting could snag on clothing, among other reasons). If you really love your engagement ring, you should wear both rings. That way, you can still show off your engagement ring, and your happily wedded status.

  • Back-up Backs for Earrings, DIY Style

It’s happened to all of us (well, all who wear earrings!). You lose the back of your earring and you’re not at home to find a spare in your jewelry box.

Here are some DIY approaches to get your through the evening:

Pencil eraser: Make a hole in the eraser with the earring. Tried and true method.

Cork: Same principle holds true with a cork. Just break off a little piece and make a hole

Aluminum foil: (Bet you didn’t know this one works!) A piece of foil folded several times over will do the job.

  • Hair Color and Earring Choice – Does it Matter?

There is no hard and fast rule for choosing jewelry according to your hair color. But let’s say there are some points you may want to consider. According to one expert:

If you have blonde or golden shade of hair, gold metal earrings may be more flatter to you than sterling silver. Likewise, dark haired women tend to find sterling silver and platinum to be complimentary metals for them. If you have red hair, gold is striking, but you may want to venture into copper which tends to look extraordinary on redheads. Mixed metals including earrings with combinations of gold and silver, or silver and copper tend to be flattering on almost anyone.

Note how gem and metal compliment hair color and outfit choice.

  • March’s Everchanging Birthstone – Aquamarine

What a varied and multi-faceted (excuse the jeweler’s pun) birthstone for the month of March. As the author of this JCK article points out, the colors of aquamarine can range from “the palest, most delicate shade of sea blue to one so vivid it can be confused for blue topaz.” Check out the many faces of March’s aquamarine:

Those born in the month of March should consider themselves lucky: They have one magnificent gemstone to call their own. Ranging from the palest, most delicate shade of sea blue to one so vivid it can be confused for blue topaz, it’s hard to find a gemstone, metal type, or clothing ensemble, for that matter, that won’t pair well with aquamarine.

  • Types of Earrings from Hoops to Huggies

Buying jewelry online requires as much knowledge as possible. No one likes to be surprised when receiving that special box in the mail!

So this little handy chart found on eBay helps you understand your earring choices better.

    Teardrops

True to their name, teardrop earrings are shaped like a teardrop or dewdrop. These earrings are generally made from solid gold, silver, or gemstones. They are designed to dangle below the earlobe. Teardrop-shaped earrings that feature extensive surface adornment are usually sold as dangle earrings.

    Dangles

Dangle earrings are those pieces which dangle below the earlobe. They may be composed of beads, rounds, squares, curved pieces of metal, or die-cut metal designs. Dangle earrings are available in both wide and narrow styles. Pay close attention to the width of a dangle earring as different widths are suitable to different face types.

    Studs

These classic earrings are composed of a single stone, ball, or small design that sits directly on the earlobe. They feature traditional earring posts. Pearl earrings that sit next to the ear may be described as stud earrings. These styles look good on every face type.

    Chandeliers

Chandelier earrings combine the design elements of stud and drop earrings. These earrings feature a decorative stud that sits on the earlobe and a component that dangles below the earlobe. Many of these earrings widen below the earlobe and then taper back to a small point.

    Hoops

These classic earrings are made from rounded or flat pieces of metal or plastic that run from the front to the back of the earlobe. They are available in a wide variety of circumferences and widths.

    Huggies

Huggie earrings are very similar to hoop earrings but are usually much smaller. These earrings generally have a wide, small hoop that clamps onto the ear with a post or clip-on mechanism. They are made from both plastics and metals.

    Cluster

Cluster earrings sit on the earlobe but feature clusters of gemstones, rhinestones, or other decorative elements that may extend beyond the bottom of the earlobe. These earrings are best suited to dressy events as they tend to be very flashy.
  • Birthstone Jewely as a Gift

As this video points out, birthstones can range in price considerably (think ruby versus garnet), but you also have the possibility of choosing the month’s birthstone (versus the star sign).

  • Valentine’s Day Facts for the Curiously Romantic

Here it comes again…that day based on romance, love and candy kisses. Some of you embrace it with every fiber of your romantic being while others cringe and run for cover.

These fun Valentine’s Day facts will keep your heart open while feeding your mind!

More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for Valentine’s Day each year.

About 8 billion candy hearts will be produced this year; that’s enough candy to stretch from Rome, Italy to Valentine, Arizona 20 times and back again.

About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged in US each year. That’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine’s Day each year.

In order of popularity, Valentine’s Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets. [Pets? Really?]

Men buy most of the millions of boxes of candy and bouquets of flowers given on Valentine’s Day.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine’s Day.

Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.

The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians around 3500 BC.

In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband.
