  • Pearls, The Mother’s Day Gift of Choice

Listen, why futz around this Mother’s Day? Sure, you could get flowers…but that’s a little uninspired, isn’t it? “Flowers…oh, they’re…lovely.” And they die in a few days. You could try clothing, but really, what a shot in the dark. You don’t have a clue what you’re mother really likes, do you? We’ve dealt with our fair share of mothers during our 100 years in business and we always hear the same refrain: it’s jewelry that counts. When a mom receives a piece of jewelry from a son or a daughter, it holds instant, deep meaning for her. It becomes a cherished item.
But jewelry is expensive! No, not necessarily. Check out these multi-colored fresh-water pearls. Pearls are a classic choice for any mother, trust us. And these start at $79!

This Mother’s Day, step outside of the box and get your order in.

  • Sunken Diamonds on The Titanic

As we commemorate 100 years since The Titanic sank, many have been reflecting on the thousands of stories that have been told about this tragedy, from so many varying standpoints. This story in particular reflects on one man, a jeweler, who managed to send one piece of jewelry home to his family, but the diamonds he accrued were lost, possibly to be found in the not-so-distant future. Thanks to Stephanie Schaefer, Editorial Assistant at JCK, for this touching piece.

Titanic Victim’s Descendants Hope for Lost Jewels

As the world commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the descendants of a jeweler who made the fateful trip still hope that his lost inventory will be found.

In the early 1900s, Marks, Jay B., and Ervin Lewy established the Lewy Brothers Jewelry Company in Chicago, Ill. The store, which catered to the carriage trade, flourished until the time of the Great Depression.

In 1912, Ervin Lewy, the youngest brother, went to Europe on a diamond buying trip.

After poor luck purchasing diamonds in Amsterdam, Ervin decided to stay in Europe a few extra days and take the Titanic back to the United States. “I’ll be here about a week yet to see if I can’t do better. Can’t catch the Rotterdam as I expected but will probably sail on the Titanic from Cherborough the 10th,” Ervin wrote in a letter he sent home.

Ervin died when the ship sunk and never made it back to America, but a gift he sent his mother arrived in the mail shortly after the voyage. “He was in Paris and saw a sapphire with a cameo carved into it at Cartier and sent it to my grandmother through mail,” Stanley Lewy, Ervin’s great-nephew, says. “When the sapphire arrived my grandfather set the stone in a ring surrounded by baguette diamonds.”

  • “I just want to thank everyone for such an amazing shopping experience!”

I received my moissanite earrings yesterday! I just want to thank everyone for such an amazing shopping experience! They arrived early, the packaging was very nice, and I really appreciated the special thanks that was hand-signed on the packing slip.

Most of all, the earrings were beyond gorgeous. They sparkle even more than I thought they would. I have family members already trying to steal them and looking to order their own…ha!

Thanks again! Look forward to more purchases :)

  • $21 Million Worth of Jewels from Recluse Heiress Huguette Clark

Can you imagine stashing away your best jewels for decades? It’s not the first time we’ve heard this kind of story, but it can’t help but make one ponder about the old adage: You can’t take it with you. If you have jewelry hidden away – or even pieces you only wear once in a blue moon because of their worth – wear them soon! Life is short and good jewelry deserves a good person wearing it!

    Huguette Clark

The 17 dazzling jewels that reclusive copper heiress Huguette Clark kept locked away in a bank’s safety deposit box for the past 70 years had their coming-out party Tuesday — winning applause and generating $21 million at auction, at least $10 million more than pre-sale estimates.

All eyes were on one piece in particular: a rare, 9-carat, Belle Epoque cushion-cut pink diamond ring (below), whose pre-sale estimate had been between $6 million and $8 million.

When the bidding started at Christie’s New York, auctioneer Rahul Kadakia called out “Four million dollars,” reports MSNBC. After a first bid, the price jumped to $7.5 million, as Kadakia said, “All right, why waste time?”

Final price: $14 million, plus commission, for a total outlay of $15,762,500.

  • Why Wear Jewelry?

Jewelry isn’t just a fashion accessory. Of course, it possesses a long history of adornment, dating back to ancient times. But there’s something deep inside of us, eons old, that feels the need to wear metals and gems.

Jewelry used to serve as charms or talismans, guarding us from evil, bad luck, ghosts, magic spells and the like. Sometimes the uses were practical. Tibetan monks, for instance, wore bell anklets as a peaceful method to warn bugs to get out of the way.And even today, most of us will confess to owning something considered a “lucky charm” that we don before special events, trips, etc.

Today, we wear jewelry to dress up our outfit, for the most part, or to accentuate our face. But we must remember, wearing jewelry has a rich history.

So when you choose your next piece of jewelry, find a piece that really calls for you. Get in touch with you adorning and ancient roots.

  • J.S. Single Row Pave Really Reunited Ring

“This piece is very special to us, as we designed it together. My husband proposed and gave me a yellow gold engagement ring in the late 1980’s. We married in 1991 but were unfortunately divorced in 1999. We realized that we made a horrible mistake and re-married in 2003. We used the same rings, but as our 10th anniversary approached, we wanted to design new rings for one another. It was very special for us to create this piece. We think that it is as unique as our relationship.”
