Moissanite versus Diamonds – Facts & Fiction

November 30, 2009

Moissanite is becoming increasingly popular during a trying economy, no doubt. It provides the sparkle and grandeur of a diamond for a fraction of the cost. But it’s not just about the pricetag. Moissanite is eco-friendly and for the savvy shopper, this is becoming increasingly relevant.

Here are a few more points on moissanite you want to ponder:

Moissanite chips easily. FALSE.

Moissanite is very hard – it is harder than every jewel except diamond. Moissanite jewels are durable and resist chipping.

Moissanite comes in different grades of color and clarity. FALSE.

There is only ONE quality of moissanite – “very good” that is distributed to the public by Charles & Colvard. That said, each Moissanite jewel is unique and no two are identical. Moissanite retailers match moissanite stones from thousands of stones for pendants, earrings and bracelets. Some moissanite retailers claim to offer only the “whitest moissanite” — but this is a misnomer and simply a marketing ploy.

More than one company manufactures moissanite. FALSE.

Only one company, Charles & Colvard, manufactures moissanite. Charles & Colvard purchase SiC crystals from two major suppliers, Cree Inc. and Norstel AB. But these suppliers do not cut the crystals into moissanite jewels. Charles & Colvard is a publicly-held company based in Morrisville, North Carolina.

Moissanite is a man-made diamond. FALSE.

Moissanite IS NOT a diamond nor a diamond simulant. Diamond is pure carbon [C]. Moissanite is composed of the compound silicon carbide [SiC] Moissanite is a laboratory created jewel. Naturally occurring moissanite is extremely rare and found only in microscopic crystals that are too small to use in jewelry. Each moissanite jewel is grown in the laboratory from a moissanite seed crystal. It takes months from start to finish to grow a single jewel. Created diamonds are grown by a similar process.

Buying Jewelry Online this Holiday

November 25, 2009

Many are fearful of buying jewelry online. Fortunately, it’s never been a safer and easier process. Especially with well-established online jewelers like us!

Jewelry online can be as much as 50% less than retail. So once you’ve found yourself a secure and reliable source, you can feel safe while saving money!
Here are a few other pointers when purchasing jewelry online:

  1. Familiarize yourself with how to measure quality in gold, diamonds or other items you may wish to purchase. Know the difference between carats and karats.
  2. Enter the word “jewelry” in a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. If desired, enter more specific words such as “rings,” “diamonds” or “gold.”

  3. Browse sites for information. Some sites offer jewelry made by known manufacturers while others have their own jewelers that make the pieces for sale.

  4. Read information on guarantees, secure ordering and returns. A piece of jewelry is a major investment, and you want to be sure your purchase is guaranteed and that your purchase price can be refunded if you want to return the item.

  5. Check to see if certificates are given, particularly for diamonds.

  6. If you are confident that the site is secure and reputable, browse the categories (“diamonds,” “gold,” “watches,” “rings,” and so on) or do a site search using the key word or words of the item you are looking for (“gold watch,” “diamond ring,” and so on).

  7. If you find a piece that interests you, you may have to click its image to make it larger so you can get a better look. While this is not necessarily a good substitute for seeing the piece in person, it will give you a pretty good idea of what the piece looks like.

  8. When you order, pay special attention to sizes and other options offered. (For example, do you want the diamond set in a yellow gold or white gold band?)

At Joseph Schubach Jewelers, if there is ever a problem, we can address it quickly and thoroughly. We pride ourselves in customer service so you can feel safe and comfortable with the entire process.

Special Disney Exhibition showcases Children’s Fine Jewelry Line

November 24, 2009

Girls Disney Princess Filigree Tiara Necklace - $329

Disney Precious Collections, the fine-jewelry line for children, will be featured in a new exhibition featuring 600 original artworks instrumental in the development of some of Disney’s most beloved animated features.

The exhibition, “Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studios,” will open at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Nov. 15 and will run through March 14, 2010.

The showcase of artworks from films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid, among others, will coincide with the premiere of Disney’s newest animated feature film: The Princess and the Frog.

To commemorate the release and exhibit, Disney Precious Collections has produced a limited-edition pendant featuring a three-pointed princess crown. Crafted in 14-karat gold and accented with fine gemstones, the keepsake pendant will be available only at the New Orleans Museum of Art and via select Disney Precious Collections retailers.

In addition to viewing pieces from the Disney Precious Collections, which is composed of two lines: “The Enchanting Gemstones” collection of 14-karat gold with diamonds and precious gems, as well as “The Enduring Enamels” collection of handcrafted 14-karat gold and brightly painted enamel designs, visitors will have a chance to peruse a children’s section celebrating Disney’s connections with jazz music and New Orleans.

Visitors viewing the artworks, on loan from the Walt Disney Studio Animation Research Library, will find that they are accompanied by film clips helping to demonstrate how individual sketches and paintings lead to a finished animated masterpiece.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this unique event and believe strongly in the importance of what Disney has represented to children throughout the years, especially little girls, the true inspiration for the Disney Precious Collections,” Jack Gindi, marketing director of Disney Precious Collections, said in a media release.

“To be featured at such a world renowned venue as the New Orleans Museum of Art and to have our Disney jewelry stand alongside such respected and revered Disney artworks is a true honor to our team.”

For more on Disney Precious Collections, check out our page dedicated to these special pieces. We’re one of the few retailers offering this limited collection. This holiday, give a piece guaranteed to please any young princess.

The SImple Elegance of a Bracelet

November 17, 2009

This holiday, if you’re stuck on simple affordable ideas for a loved one, consider the bracelet, an oft-forgotten piece of jewelry. Many women focus predominantly on earrings and necklaces and often forgo the elegance a bracelet can provide.

Besides, they are all the rage this season. According to one expert:

Bracelets, bracelets, bracelets!

The wrist will take on new importance this fall and winter and what better way to flatter an appendage than with a bold cuff bracelet. Though a large, unadorned cuff bracelet makes a statement on its own, cuffs sprinkled with stones and jewels of all types are also fabulous. These bold statement pieces will take your wrists from ordinary to extraordinary without spending a fortune. Feeling creative? Buy a plain cuff bracelet and decorate it with the stones and jewels of your choice

Here’s one of our most popular bracelets – one you simply couldn’t go wrong choosing:

Color, Jewelry, Economy

November 16, 2009

The release of the PANTONE Fashion Color Report coincides with the beginning of New York Fashion Week.

“Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“Instead of reinventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.”

Yellow has made its mark on fashion and spring will further this trend with gleaming Aurora. Reminiscent of the first glimpse of yellow as the sun begins to rise over the horizon, this shimmering, slightly greenish yellow adds a bold infusion. Energy continues to surge throughout the warmer hues, leading to provocative Fusion Coral. This inviting orange connects directly to tangy Tomato Puree, this season’s classic red. Pair it with Turquoise for a retro look.

When it comes to yellow, nothing is better than the complex and rich yellows of Gemesis, covering just about every shade under the sun. Not only is Gemesis is fashionable with its varied yellows, but costwise, you can have your cake and eat it too!
