Custom Moissanite Jewelry

  • What’s the Best Way to Save Money on an Engagement Ring?

Joseph Schubach Jewelers in Scottsdale, AZ. Joe is a third-generation jeweler and our company creates high-end custom design engagement rings, so we’re highly knowledgeable on ways to save you money for your upcoming wedding.

    Here are our top suggestions:

    1. Moissanite

We can’t stress this one enough. So many of our clients who couldn’t afford a ring using natural diamonds saw their dreams come true with moissanite. Moissanite is more than a diamond simulant; it’s a lab-created diamond, with parallel properties. It even exceeds diamonds in some areas, such as brilliance.

It’s also an eco-friendly choice. Considering many jewelers can’t tell the difference between moissanite and diamonds, we think this is one of the best ways to save money and choose the ring of your dreams.

    2. Custom design it.

When YOU decide on the material and design of your ring, you have much more control regarding the overall cost of the ring. In addition to having a one-of-a-kind ring, you intrinsically feel more connected with the ring, because it’s your brain child with your personal signature. You’ll learn what metals and gems are more affordable than others and base your design accordingly.

    3. Ring Makeovers

Many have a family heirloom in their possession but aren’t fond of the design. A ring makeover allows you to use the existing material and upgrade the look according to your style. It’s also an eco-friendly choice, since you’re repurposing an existing piece of jewelry. On top of that, you have a ring with family history imbued in it.

I’m going to go out on a limb here. And I’m sure you’ll send me comments if you disagree. But when it comes to engagement and wedding rings, men don’t care to the same extent that women do. Yes, yes…they care. But they’re a little more flexible. Women often have a very fixed idea of what they want whereas men need a bit more guidance.

It got me thinking of an engaged couple I encountered a few months ago.  They were on a tight budget. She wanted a very specific pear-shaped diamond engagement ring. He wanted…whatever she thought was best. Though he did want a little sparkle. I suggested moissanite for him, diamond for her.

If you’re unfamiliar with moissanite, here’s a good definition:

Moissanite was first identified as a rare natural substance in meteorites. In the late 1800’s, Dr. Henri Moissan discovered the substance associated with a fallen meteor in Arizona. But it is only recently that moissanite was on the market for purchase. Today, moissanite gemstones are synthetically produced for jewelry. Moissanite’s durability and resistance to heat create it straightforward to figure with for jewelers. Many individuals are drawn to the stone’s original “otherworldly” origins, and diamond-like appearance.

Charles & Colvard is the sole manufacturer of moissanite. JC Penney now sells the line, calling it “one among the fastest growing decisions for jewels today.”

Moissanite also come with a lifetime warranty.

In short, it’s an ideal choice for a couple preparing for marriage who are on a tight budget but don’t want to sacrifice quality. The durability factor of moissanite is a real plus for the hard-working guy as well.

  • “I think the diamond industry would be quaking”

    (Another great testimonial for moissanite)

    Hi Beth,
I just wanted to let you know that I got my ring yesterday and i LOVE
it. I was a little bit wary of the green/grey cast that folks say Moissanite
has, but I haven’t seen it in this stone. Even in a dark room it looks so
brilliant! Your service was great and I really could not be happier. If
people understood how beautiful Moissanite was, I think the diamond industry
would be quaking, unfortunately people are too sucked into the marketing of
a diamond. Also, wanted to let you know I’ve sent my best friend CeCe
Hernandez your way so be super nice to her! Again, thank you SO much. Your
customer service was superior to the other sites I visited and I am truly a
    satisfied customer.

    Thanks,
    A

  • Moissanite Testimonial – We Couldn’t Have Said It Any Better!

(regarding a custom moissanite engagement ring)

    Hi Beth,

I wanted to give you an update.  I got engaged recently and my fiancee
absolutely loves the ring.  There’s just one problem — her co-workers
are a little jealous!  The moissanite is so sparkly and the ring looks
    a little too good.

We decided to go to the mall to see what kind of wedding band would
look nice with it.  In the first store we went to, the woman asked if
she could clean the ring.  We said sure and we were both nervous that
somehow the woman would know it wasn’t diamond and would say something
but she didn’t say anything or seem suspicious.  At the next store,
which even used to sell moissanite, the employee was taken aback when
he saw the ring and said “oh, wow!”  He put a normal diamond wedding
band next to it, but it looked dull in comparison so he steered us
toward their most expensive wedding bands.  We took the ring to
Tiffany’s and they asked us if it was a Tiffany Novo ring.  The only
diamond ring we saw that could compare to the moissanite was an actual
Hearts on Fire.  I guess it’s just the way they cut it.  Nobody had
any idea that her ring was anything other than a very high quality
    diamond ring.

We’re in the process of choosing a wedding band to go with it and
we’re planning on having either pink moissanite or pink sapphire in
    it. . . .

  • Moissanite – It’s Time you Knew

    moissanite-joseph-schubach-jewelers

    (above) Gem-cut Moissanite

Moissanite is one of our favorite gems to work with here at Joseph Schubach Jewelers. Not only is moissanite ecologically-friendly, it allows our customers to experience that diamond-rich feeling for a fraction of the price.

    What exactly is moissanite?

Mineral moissanite was discovered by Henri Moissan while examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona, in 1893. At first, he mistakenly identified the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he identified the crystals as silicon carbide.

Moissanite is not cubic zirconia. It maintains properties similar and often exceeding those of diamonds:

Moissanite is very hard to differentiate from diamond and can fool many gemologists. It does have many similarities. It is very hard at 9.25 (diamond is 10) and it is highly refractive with an index of refraction of 2.6 – 2.7 (diamond’s IR is slightly lower at 2.42).

So take a stroll through our Moissanite Gallery. Again, we’re particularly proud of the work we’re doing with moissanite. It’s a jewel for the 21st century, in our opinion!

If you want a custom designed moissanite piece, give us a call and an idea. We can make your moissanite dream come true!

Custom Claddagh Engagement Ring With Wedding Band

    Custom Claddagh Engagement Ring

I was able to pick up the rings from Fedex this afternoon, but was only able to really get a chance to look at them now. They both look spectacular! It really came out better than I could have hoped for! I think the ruby heart surrounding the pink center stone really makes a statement, and is certainly something I’ve never seen before! No one could say no to a ring like that! I also love how well the wedding band fits in with the engagement ring. It really fits together perfectly, just like they were made to. Certainly a sign of an excellent craftsman! Thank you for all your help and for putting up with me! I will be sure to tell you how and when the proposal goes down (haven’t quite decided on details just yet) but I know I will certainly be calling on you again for pieces in the future. Of that I am sure!

Thank You so very, very much!

We were going through the archives and found this custom palladium engagement ring from a while back. The center stone is a pink moissanite and the side stones are natural diamonds. The pictures are courtesy of our customer.

  • Semi-Custom Jewelry Design

    Example of a Semi-Custom Ring

This is a great example of how you can take a standard, stock item and customize it to make an affordable, completely unique, one of a kind item just for you.

Our client came to us with a design idea they found. The original design had an antique style with a pink center stone, pave set side diamonds and rose gold accents. It is made from a white metal, probably platinum. Our customer wanted a ring created that incorporated these main elements – and fit into his budget.

Now we’re not certain what the inspirational ring cost but by looking at the size of the baguette side diamonds alone, we figure it must be well into the tens of thousands of dollars. It’s a beautiful piece but more than likely a little out of range for most people.

This is where our semi-custom jewelry design fits in. We were able to take a standard, stock item and customize it to give the look and feel of our customer’s original idea and fit it into his budget.

For this piece we started with a 14kt white gold casting. We set moissanite stones down the sides of the shank and small diamonds on the halo surrounding the center stone. The white gold prongs were replaced with rose gold prongs. We then opened up the side gallery slightly and added rose gold filigree scrolls for a subtle two tone accent.  To finish the piece, we set a cushion cut lab grown pink sapphire as the main, center stone.

As for the final verdict from the customer?

“Hi Joe, thanks very much for the fantastic job on Cher’s ring.  She absolutely loves it!!!!”

    Music to our ears!
